Packing & Fulfillment Manager — Merzbacher’s
Germantown, Philadelphia | Full-time | On-site
Merzbacher’s has been baking artisan bread in Philadelphia for over 10 years. A few months ago we acquired the wholesale business of Metropolitan Bakery, nearly doubling the amount of bread leaving our bakery every day. We’re now looking for a Packing & Fulfillment Manager to help lead the next chapter of our operation.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys building strong teams, improving systems, and creating calm in a fast-moving production environment. If you like taking ownership of an operation and making it more organized, more consistent, and more reliable over time, we’d love to hear from you.
About us
We bake naturally leavened and yeasted artisan bread for roughly 200 wholesale customers throughout the Philadelphia region.
What began as one baker renting oven time overnight has grown into a busy production bakery with a simple philosophy: bread is everyday food, and everyday food deserves extraordinary care. Quality matters to us. Consistency matters just as much.
Every afternoon, thousands of pieces of bread move through our packing department before heading to restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, and markets across the region. That final step is just as important as the baking itself. Customers don’t experience our production schedule—they experience whether the right bread arrives at the right place in the right condition.
We’re also in an exciting period of growth. Bringing together two long-standing Philadelphia bakeries has created new opportunities—and new challenges—and we’re looking for someone who wants to help shape what comes next.
The role
This position combines two equally important responsibilities.
First, you’ll be an active part of the packing and fulfillment operation. You’ll spend time on the floor packing orders, supporting the team during busy periods, solving problems as they arise, and making sure every order leaves complete, accurate, and on time. This is a hands-on management role—not one that’s spent behind a desk.
Second, you’ll lead the packing department.
That means developing leads and team members, creating schedules, improving workflows, maintaining inventory, documenting procedures, and building systems that make the department more consistent over time. Some days will require jumping into production wherever you’re needed; others will focus more heavily on planning, coaching, and continuous improvement. Success comes from being able to move comfortably between both.
You’ll work closely with the owner and the rest of our management team to build a fulfillment department that’s organized, dependable, and continually improving.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone with:
Our packing team is multilingual, and several team members primarily speak French. You don’t need to speak French yourself, but patience, respect, and clear communication are essential.
Experience in food production is a plus, but we’re equally interested in strong operational leaders who enjoy building teams and improving systems.
What success looks like
Six months into this role, we’d hope to see:
This isn’t about becoming the person who fixes every problem yourself. It’s about creating systems and developing people so the department becomes stronger over time.
What makes this role different
This is an opportunity to have real influence.
You’ll report directly to me, and you’ll have genuine ownership over how our packing and fulfillment department operates. Alongside our production, operations, customer relationships, and business operations managers, you’ll help shape the future of a growing bakery.
We’re still refining many of our systems following a major expansion. If you enjoy bringing order to complexity, improving workflows, and helping people do their best work, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to make a lasting impact here.
The work
This is a physically active production environment. You’ll spend much of your shift on your feet, moving throughout the bakery, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working alongside the team.
The position generally runs afternoons into the evening, beginning around 2:00 p.m. and finishing once the day’s orders are packed and ready to leave. Seasonal peaks occasionally require additional hours.
The work is demanding, but it’s meaningful. Every loaf that leaves this bakery represents a promise to one of our customers. This role helps make sure we keep it.
Compensation
Salary starts at $52,000-$62,000, depending on experience, with a clear path for growth as responsibilities expand.
How to apply
Send an email telling us a little about yourself, the teams you’ve led, and what interests you about this role. A résumé is welcome, but we’d much rather get a sense of who you are than read a formal cover letter.
If you’ve helped build systems, improve an operation, or lead a team through growth, we’d love to hear about it.
